The Phoebe H. Stein Child Life Program at CHAM recognizes the unique emotional and developmental needs of children and their families throughout their healthcare experience. The role of the Child Life Program is to help children successfully cope with illness, injury and treatment so that they may continue to live normal lives during their healthcare experience.

A stay in the hospital can be an especially challenging time for children and their families. In addition to the initial distress of illness and injury, unfamiliar faces, sounds, smells and surroundings may leave children feeling anxious, isolated and uncomfortable.

Child life specialists are professionals trained at a bachelor's or master's level that can be certified by the National Child Life Council to help patients, ranging from newborns to young adults, and their families minimize stress and trauma during medical events. Our program:
- Creates a comfortable and familiar hospital environment for children and families.
- Educates children and their families on illnesses, injuries, medical equipment and treatment.
- Prepares children and their families for tests, procedures and surgeries.
- Addresses common fears and misunderstandings and provides emotional support.
- Supplies children with age-appropriate recreational activities in the playroom and at bedsides.

Our child life specialists are here for every child. Core activities include developmentally appropriate play, medical play and preparation, procedural support, art and music therapy, and a resource center. We also maintain a full agenda of special events for our young patients, including pet therapy, movies, arts and crafts, a hospital patient art gallery and a horticulture program.

With developmentally appropriate guidance of certified child life specialists, children are provided with various activities to help them learn about their illness, injury, medical/surgical procedures, hospital routines, and the medical team they will encounter during their stay. Children are given the opportunity to explore medical equipment, photo preparation books, and teaching dolls to help relieve any fears and concerns they may have. The child life staff members are available to provide comfort, support and accompany children during medical procedures and exams.

Our professionals are trained in child development and in the specific issues of the medically ill child. They provide emotional support and a variety of play experiences to decrease fear and enhance understanding for pediatric patients. We recognize that children rely on their families for support, thus, parents, siblings and extended family members are also provided services for education and successful coping.

Your child's needs in the hospital are similar to those at home: He or she needs to feel secure, comforted, and able to understand what is going on. These needs are often magnified by the stress of illness and hospitalization. The Child Life program at NewYork-Presbyterian Morgan Stanley Children's Hospital provides emotional and psychosocial care to help make the hospital experience as manageable as possible for children and their family members. The Child Life staff includes accredited professionals who apply their child development expertise to help your child understand, cope with, and master his or her medical experiences.

Child life specialists can be found in many areas of our hospital. They recognize and address your child's reactions to the stresses of illness and medical procedures. They assess each child's and family's individual psychosocial needs and provide appropriate interventions. These interventions include, but are not limited to, preparations for tests and procedures, coping strategies, and diversions during procedures, as well as play activities to help normalize the environment.

Activities, such as playing with toys, arts and crafts, video games and computers, can take place either at your child's bedside or in our Child Life Centers, which are located on the Tower 4, 5, and 6 units. There is also a family lounge on each patient floor where you can use the computer to access the Internet, use a microwave to heat food, or just relax.

Hospitalization can be scary for anyone. For children, it can be a particularly frightening experience. At NYU Winthrop Hospital, we created our Child Life Program specifically to ease the fear and anxiety of children who are hospitalized and their families by addressing their unique emotional and development needs during this challenging time. The Program’s child life specialists are trained in child development and in meeting the special needs of children who are ill and hospitalized. Through play, education and support, the specialists help calm fears, plan fun-filled activities, and take away the stress and loneliness that can be a part of the hospital experience.

Child Life at Yale New Haven Children's Hospital helps children cope with the adjustments of being in a hospital by providing a variety of play experiences. These activities help both children and families gain a greater understanding of medical procedures, which helps reduce stress and fear of the unknown. Through play, the child life specialist helps facilitate the emotional and social growth of a child during the crisis of illness.

In collaboration with the Yale New Haven medical staff, a certified child life specialist is available to all children in the hospital and in our clinics to provide:
- Medical play, which helps children learn about various tests, procedures and surgeries and corrects any misconceptions children may have.
- Distraction techniques to minimize the stress during an examination or procedure. These techniques can be as simple as blowing bubbles or having a favorite toy nearby, which make the hospital a little less scary and the procedure a little bit easier.
- Expressive activities that encourage children to share their thoughts and feelings about their hospital experience.
- Developmentally appropriate information and preparation about medical procedures.
- Support for the child and family during medical procedures and examinations.

Art and recreational activities are offered in playrooms, as well as medical play, magic shows and holiday celebrations. Patients of all ages are welcome. If a child cannot come to a playroom because of activity restrictions or isolation precautions, a child life specialist can provide recreational and therapeutic activities at the bedside.

Hours are 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, please call 203-688-2334.
